Visa Checklist

If you are looking into a student visa for Australia, it is important you know what documents are needed and any other requirements. Please find listed below some helpful information to assist you with your Visa process. Please click here for a printer friendly pdf version of the checklist.

1. Preparing Your Application

  • Early Application: Submit your visa application at least 8 weeks before your course begins. If you are already in Australia, ensure you apply well before your current visa expires to avoid last-minute issues.
  • Health Examinations: You may need to undergo health examinations, which can be completed before submitting your visa application. Learn More
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC): All students must have OSHC for the duration of their stay in Australia. Arrange this before applying for your visa and have your policy details ready. Find OSHC Providers

2. Collecting Your Documents

  • Valid Passport: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months before applying for your visa.
  • Confirmation of Enrolment (COE): Obtain a CoE from your chosen educational institution, confirming your offer and payment of pre-tuition fees.
  • Genuine Student (GS) Requirement: Demonstrate that studying in Australia is your primary reason for applying. This includes questions about your current situation, course choice, and reasons for selecting Australia.  More Information
  • English Proficiency: Depending on your course and passport country, you may need to pass an approved English language test.
  • Financial Requirements: Provide evidence that you meet the financial requirements for one year. This varies if you have dependents. Check the specific documents needed using this Document Checklist Tool.

3. Submitting Your Visa Application

  • Authorised Agents: Given the complexity of the visa application process, we recommend using an authorised visa agent. Ensure they are licensed and have good reviews.

If no agents are available in your region, please contact us for assistance with your study options and application.

4. Post-Application Steps

  • Stay in Contact with Your Agent: After submission, stay in touch with your agent, as the immigration department may request additional documents or information. Your agent will handle these requests efficiently.
  • Biometrics: You might need to provide biometrics. If required, you will receive a letter with instructions. Arrange an appointment promptly as you will have 14 days to provide biometrics. Do this before travelling to Australia.
  • Update Your Agent on Changes: Inform your agent immediately of any significant changes, such as:
    • Withdrawing your application
    • Changes to your contact details
    • Changes in relationship status
    • Birth of a child
    • Changes to your welfare arrangements

5. Visa Decision

  • Review Your Visa Grant Letter: Once your visa is approved, you will receive a visa grant letter detailing your visa grant number, expiration date, and conditions. Always keep a copy of this document with you in Australia.

6. Maintaining Your Visa Validity

  • Academic Progress: Stay enrolled and maintain satisfactory academic performance and attendance to avoid visa cancellation.
  • Updated Contact Information: Inform your educational institution of your current address and any changes promptly.
  • Financial Stability: Ensure you maintain financial stability throughout your stay.
  • Adhere to Work Restrictions: Do not exceed the work limits of your visa. Most student visas allow up to 40 hours of work per fortnight during term time.
  • Avoid Unauthorised Educational Changes: If you plan to change your course or education level, you may need a new visa. Ensure all changes comply with your visa conditions.
